BENEFITS OF GETTING AN OIL CHANGE AT A CHEVY DEALERSHIP

When it comes to maintaining your vehicle in Plainfield, Joliet, Oswego or Bolingbrook, it’s important to prevent problems before they start so you can avoid major breakdowns and expensive repairs. That’s why your Chevrolet needs regular oil changes to keep it running smoothly and reliably. Here’s what you should know about getting your oil changed!

Why is oil important to your vehicle?

Engine oil keeps all the moving parts under your hood going smooth and strong. Your valves, pistons, and other active engine parts rely on clean oil for lubrication and heat dissipation — keeping your engine from overheating.

Over time and use, engine oil gathers debris, particles and dirt, which makes the oil darker, thicker, and filled with sludge. Heavily polluted oil is less effective for lubrication and heat control, which in turn causes damage to your engine.

What’s more, dirty oil contributes to a loss of engine power and decreased fuel efficiency, effecting both performance and gas mileage.

What types of oil are there?

There are four main types of motor oil used in vehicles. They are:

  • Conventional: This is the ‘regular’ type of motor oil, usually recommended for simply designed vehicles and drivers with moderate driving habits.
  • High-mileage: This type of motor oil is formulated specifically for late model vehicles, or any vehicle with more than 75,000 miles on it. High-mileage oil helps to prevent oil leaks and reduce oil burn off.
  • Synthetic: This highly formulated type of motor oil is used for newer vehicles and vehicles with complex engines. Synthetic oil is designed to perform well in extreme low or high temperatures and under high-stress driving conditions.
  • Synthetic blend: A mixture of conventional and synthetic oils, this type of motor oil provides oxidation resistance and improves performance at low temperatures.

All of these types of oil are available in a variety of grades and viscosity levels.

What do the numbers mean?

You may have noticed that motor oil is labeled with numbers, such as 10W-40 or 5W-30. These numbers refer to the viscosity, or thickness, of the oil.

The numbers on the oil refer to the viscosity in both low and high temperatures (and the W stands for “winter”). The first number before the W is the cold weather viscosity, and in this case, the lower the number, the better the viscosity at low temperatures. The second number refers to hot weather viscosity — here, higher numbers mean thicker oil (and better protection) at high temperatures.

How often should you get your oil changed?

Most manufacturers recommend changing your vehicle’s oil every three months. Regular oil changes should include replacing the oil filter as well as the engine oil.

The advantages of getting your oil changed at a Chevy dealership in Illinois

When you bring your vehicle for an oil change at a Chevy dealership, you’ll typically receive a free vehicle inspection. The mechanic at the dealership will be able to spot potential issues with your vehicle, so you can prevent more expensive repairs down the road.
